FAIR data principles are a set of guidelines designed to make research data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. They were published in 2016 by a group of researchers and aim to improve the way data is managed and shared within the scientific community and beyond. The goal of FAIR is to maximize the value of data, enabling new discoveries and facilitating collaboration.

Findable means that data should be easy to locate. This is achieved through persistent identifiers, such as DOIs, and rich metadata that describes the data. Accessible refers to the ability to retrieve the data. While accessibility is a core principle, it does not necessarily mean open access; sensitive data may have restricted access, but the mechanisms for requesting access should be clear.

Interoperable means that data can be integrated with other data sources and used by different applications. This requires using standardized vocabularies, ontologies, and data formats. Reusable signifies that data is well-described and has associated metadata, making it possible for others to use it in new contexts, including for future research. This involves clear licensing and ownership information. Adhering to FAIR principles helps prevent data from becoming lost or unusable, thereby promoting a more efficient and impactful research ecosystem.
