In an exponential growth model, the quantity increases at a rate that is directly proportional to its current size. This can be represented by the differential equation dy/dt = ky, where y is the quantity, t is time, and k is a constant rate of growth. The solution to this equation is y = y0 * e^(kt), where y0 is the initial quantity and e is the base of the natural logarithm. This equation shows that the quantity grows without bound over time, assuming k is positive.

Conversely, in an exponential decay model, the quantity decreases at a rate proportional to its current size. This is represented by the same differential equation, but with a negative rate constant (k < 0). The solution to this equation is y = y0 * e^(kt), which shows that the quantity approaches zero as time increases.

Exponential models are powerful tools for understanding and predicting various natural and social phenomena. However, they are often used in situations where the underlying assumptions may not hold, such as when the growth rate is not constant or when the quantity is bounded.
