Executioner

An executioner is a person legally authorized to carry out a sentence of capital punishment on behalf of a state, ruler, or religious authority. In many historical systems the office was formally recorded, sometimes hereditary, and in others a trusted official or guild member. Today the death penalty is abolished or restricted in many parts of the world, reducing the role of the executioner to historical record or specialized personnel under strict legal guidelines in the few jurisdictions that retain capital punishment.
