Excitonpitoisuus

Excitonpitoisuus refers to the concentration of excitons within a material. An exciton is a bound state of an electron and an electron hole, which are attracted to each other by the electrostatic Coulomb force. When a photon with sufficient energy is absorbed by a semiconductor or insulator, it can create an exciton. This process involves promoting an electron from the valence band to a higher energy state, leaving behind a hole in the valence band. The electron and hole then form a transient quasiparticle.

The concentration of these excitons is important for understanding various optical and electronic properties of materials. High excitonpitoisuus can lead to nonlinear optical effects, such as optical saturation, where the material's absorption decreases as the exciton density increases. It can also influence electrical conductivity, as excitons can transport charge. In some cases, at very high concentrations, excitons can interact with each other, forming more complex states like biexcitons. Measuring and controlling excitonpitoisuus is crucial in fields like optoelectronics, where devices rely on the generation and manipulation of excitons for their operation, such as in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and solar cells. The term is primarily used in Finnish scientific literature, with "exciton concentration" being the direct English translation.
