Eufrat

Eufrat is the name used in several languages for the Euphrates River, one of Western Asia’s major rivers. In Turkish and some other languages the river is referred to as Fırat or Eufrat. The river has played a central role in the history and development of the Mesopotamian region.

Geography and course: The Euphrates rises in eastern Anatolia, in Turkey, from the confluence of the Karasu and Murat rivers in the Taurus mountains. It flows generally southeast, passing through southern Turkey and into Syria, then enters Iraq. In Iraq, it joins the Tigris to form the Shatt al-Arab, which empties into the Persian Gulf. The river’s length is about 2,800 kilometers, and its drainage basin covers roughly 444,000 square kilometers.

Human use and infrastructure: The Euphrates has supported irrigation and agriculture for millennia and remains a crucial source of water and energy. Major dams along its course include the Keban, Karakaya, and Atatürk dams in Turkey, and the Haditha Dam in Iraq, which regulate flow and generate electricity. The river’s waters support cities, farms, and industries, though water management remains a contention among riparian states.

History and significance: The Euphrates and its basin formed the cradle of ancient Mesopotamian civilizations, including Ur, Uruk, Akkad, and Babylon. The river’s floodplain supported early urbanization, trade networks, and religious life, shaping broad cultural developments in the ancient Near East.

Environmental and contemporary issues: In recent decades damming, diversions, and climate variability have reduced flows, increased salinity, and affected ecosystems and livelihoods in Turkey, Syria, and Iraq, highlighting regional water governance challenges.
