Etyleenidioksidiyksiköiden, often referred to as EO units in English, are recurring structural units derived from ethylene oxide. Ethylene oxide is a cyclic ether with the chemical formula C2H4O. When ethylene oxide polymerizes or reacts, it forms repeating units characterized by an ether linkage (-O-) and two ethylene groups (-CH2CH2-). These units are fundamental building blocks in various polymers and chemical compounds.

The most common manifestation of ethylene oxide units is in polyethylene glycol (PEG) and its derivatives. PEG is a polyether compound with the general formula H-(OCH2CH2)n-OH, where 'n' represents the number of ethylene oxide units. The length of the PEG chain, determined by 'n', significantly influences its physical and chemical properties, such as solubility, viscosity, and melting point.

Ethylene oxide units are also found in polyoxyethylene ethers, which are formed when ethylene oxide reacts with alcohols or phenols. These compounds are widely used as surfactants, emulsifiers, and detergents due to their amphiphilic nature, possessing both hydrophilic (ether linkages) and hydrophobic (alkyl chain) characteristics. The presence and number of EO units are crucial in determining the efficacy and application range of these surfactants. Furthermore, ethylene oxide units can be incorporated into other polymer structures to modify their properties.
