Ethanolens is a semisynthetic chemical compound that is structurally related to ethanol but includes an additional benzene ring and a hydroxylated side chain. Its molecular formula is C₉H₁₀O₂, and it has a boiling point of approximately 171°C and a density of 0.91 g/mL at 20°C. The compound is colorless with a faint floral odor and is miscible with water and most organic solvents.

Ethanolens is produced through the condensation of acetophenone with ethylene glycol followed by catalytic hydrogenation. The process typically employs a palladium catalyst under mild temperature and pressure conditions, yielding a product purity of 98%. The final purification step involves recrystallization from ethanol, producing crystals that appear light yellow in the solid state.

Industrial applications of ethanolens include its use as a solvent extender in the manufacture of high‑performance inks, coatings, and adhesives. It is also employed as a solvent in pharmaceutical formulations where its lower volatility compared with conventional solvents is advantageous. Moreover, preliminary studies have indicated that ethanolens can act as a mild antiseptic, providing a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against Gram‑positive and Gram‑negative bacteria.

In terms of safety, ethanolens is hygroscopic and should be stored in tightly sealed containers to avoid moisture absorption. While toxicological data suggest a low acute toxicity profile, chronic exposure studies have not yet been conducted.
