Etelä-Suomen lääni, commonly referred to as Etelä-Suomi, was a province of Finland from 1997 to 2010. It covered the southern part of the country and included the capital region, making it an important hub for politics, economy, and culture in Finland’s south. The provincial capital was Helsinki, the national capital.

Geographically, Etelä-Suomen lääni bordered Itä-Suomen lääni to the east and Länsi-Suomen lääni to the west, with the Gulf of Finland forming its southern boundary. The province thus encompassed a dense metropolitan area as well as smaller urban centers and rural areas in southern Finland.

Historically, the province was created in 1997 as part of Finland’s reform of its provincial structure, consolidating the previous provinces into larger administrative units. It existed until 2010, when the provinces were abolished and their responsibilities were redistributed to regional state administration and other regional authorities as part of a nationwide decentralization and reform of regional governance.

In governance terms, Etelä-Suomen lääni served as a coordinating entity for regional planning, transport, culture, and public services in southern Finland. Its existence reflected Finland’s centralized approach to regional administration prior to the 2010 reform and the subsequent shift toward a more regionally oriented administrative framework.
