Etäisyysyksikkö

Etäisyysyksikkö is a Finnish term that translates to "unit of distance" or "distance unit" in English. It refers to any standardized measure used to quantify the separation between two points. Throughout history and in various scientific and everyday contexts, different distance units have been developed and adopted to meet specific needs.

The most common and universally recognized distance unit is the meter, which is the base unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). The meter is defined based on the speed of light in a vacuum. Larger distances are often measured in kilometers, with one kilometer being equal to one thousand meters. For smaller distances, centimeters and millimeters are commonly used, with one meter containing one hundred centimeters and one centimeter containing ten millimeters.

Beyond the SI system, other distance units exist. The imperial system, still in use in some countries, employs units like the inch, foot, yard, and mile. Astronomical distances, such as the space between stars and galaxies, are measured using the light-year, which is the distance light travels in one year, or the parsec, a unit derived from parallax measurements. In navigation, nautical miles are used, which are based on the Earth's circumference. The choice of distance unit depends on the scale of the measurement and the specific field of application.
