Esteröitymisreaktiolla, or esterification, is a chemical reaction in which an alcohol reacts with a carboxylic acid to form an ester and water. This reaction is catalyzed by an acid or a base and is commonly used in various industries, including food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. The general reaction can be represented as follows:

R-COOH + R'OH → R-COO-R' + H2O

where R-COOH is a carboxylic acid, R'OH is an alcohol, R-COO-R' is an ester, and H2O is water.

The reaction proceeds via a nucleophilic substitution mechanism, where the alcohol (nucleophile) attacks the carbonyl carbon of the carboxylic acid, forming an intermediate hemiacetal. This intermediate then loses water to yield the final ester product.
