Esterházy
Esterházy, in Hungarian Eszterházy, is the name of one of the oldest and most prominent noble families of the Kingdom of Hungary, with branches that owned lands across present-day Hungary, Austria, and Slovakia. The family rose to prominence in the late medieval and early modern periods through military service and strategic marriages and came to hold extensive estates and influential offices at the Habsburg court. The Esterházy were later granted princely rank and established their seat at Eisenstadt in what is now Austria; their Hungarian country residence became the Eszterházy palace at Fertőd, a major Baroque complex constructed in the 18th century.
