Esiintyvyyttä, often translated as prevalence, is a fundamental concept in epidemiology and public health. It refers to the proportion of a population that has a specific characteristic or condition at a given point in time or over a specified period. This characteristic can be a disease, a risk factor, a behavior, or any other health-related status.

There are two main types of prevalence: point prevalence and period prevalence. Point prevalence measures the proportion of individuals with the condition at a single, specific moment in time. For example, it could be the number of people currently infected with influenza on January 1st. Period prevalence, on the other hand, measures the proportion of individuals who had the condition at any point during a defined period, such as a year or a lifetime. This includes new cases that arise during the period and existing cases that persist.

Prevalence is typically expressed as a percentage or a rate per a certain number of people (e.g., per 1,000 or per 100,000). It is a crucial metric for understanding the burden of disease within a population, for planning healthcare services, and for evaluating the effectiveness of public health interventions. High prevalence of a condition suggests it is common in the population, while low prevalence indicates it is rare. It is important to distinguish prevalence from incidence, which measures the rate of new cases occurring over a period of time. Prevalence is influenced by both incidence and the duration of the condition.
