Escribirse

Escribirse is a Spanish pronominal verb derived from escribir. It covers several related meanings depending on context: to write to someone or to correspond with someone, and to enroll or register in a course, club, or publication. The reflexive form can indicate that the action is directed at the subject or, in reciprocal situations, that it is mutual. In many contexts, the non-pronominal verb escribir is used for general writing.

Conjugation is shown in the present as: me escribo, te escribes, se escribe, nos escribimos, os escribís, se escriben. In the preterite: me escribí, te escribiste, se escribió, nos escribimos, os escribisteis, se escribieron. In the imperfect: me escribía, te escribías, se escribía, nos escribíamos, os escribíais, se escribían.

Uso: correspondencia and mutual writing. Examples include “se escribían cartas” or “nos escribimos con frecuencia” to express that people wrote to each other. Enrollments and subscriptions are another sense; in many dialects, speakers prefer inscribirse or afiliarse for formal enrollment, while escribir(se) can appear in informal speech to signal joining a list or activity. The meaning can shift with context and with the presence of other pronouns or indirect objects (for example, escribir a alguien means to write to someone, without reciprocity).
