Esaran

Esaran is a traditional form of classical dance and music originating from the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the eight margam (styles) of Bharatanatyam, the most well-known classical dance form of India. The term "Esaran" refers to the region of Tamil Nadu where this style was historically performed, particularly in the areas around Tiruvannamalai and Kanchipuram.

Esaran Bharatanatyam is characterized by its graceful, fluid movements and intricate footwork, often accompanied by devotional lyrics in Tamil. The dance is deeply rooted in temple traditions, with many performances dedicated to Hindu deities such as Shiva, Vishnu, and Murugan. Unlike some other styles of Bharatanatyam, Esaran retains a strong connection to its rural origins, with simpler yet expressive gestures and a focus on storytelling through movement.

The music of Esaran is typically in the Carnatic tradition, featuring melodic compositions known as varnams, padams, and jalis. The rhythm is often marked by the mridangam (drum) and veena (string instrument), with vocalists or instrumentalists leading the performance. The dance itself incorporates adavu (basic steps), nattuvangam (rhythmic clapping), and araiyattam (temple dance rituals).
