Erromango

Erromango is a tropical island in the south of Vanuatu, part of Tafea Province. The island covers a sizable area and is characterized by a rugged interior of hills and valleys covered in tropical rainforest, with a coastal fringe of villages and beaches. It has a small, scattered population that primarily lives in coastal settlements and river valleys.

Historically, Erromango was inhabited for centuries by Melanesian communities. Contact with Europeans began in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, involving traders and Christian missionaries. The island was the site of violent clashes in 1839 between islanders and a visiting party of Europeans, which led to deaths and a decline in European contact for years. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Erromango, like the rest of the New Hebrides, came under British-French condominium administration and later joined the independent nation of Vanuatu in 1980.

Today Erromango is sparsely populated and largely dependent on subsistence farming and fishing. The island maintains traditional practices and languages, with communities organized around kinship and customary land use. Tourism remains limited but is growing slowly as visitors seek its natural scenery and cultural heritage.
