Eritysjärjestelmien, which translates to "excretory systems" in English, refers to the biological mechanisms by which living organisms remove waste products from their bodies. These systems are crucial for maintaining homeostasis, the stable internal environment necessary for survival. Different organisms have evolved diverse excretory systems adapted to their specific environments and metabolic needs.

In simple organisms like single-celled protozoa, waste products are often expelled directly into the surrounding environment through diffusion or via contractile vacuoles. More complex animals possess specialized organs and tissues dedicated to excretion. For example, in many invertebrates, flame cells or nephridia are responsible for filtering waste from body fluids and expelling it.

Vertebrates, including humans, have highly developed excretory systems. The primary excretory organs are the kidneys, which filter blood, remove metabolic wastes such as urea, and regulate water and electrolyte balance. Urine, containing these waste products, is then transported through the ureters to the bladder for storage and eventually eliminated from the body through the urethra. Other excretory routes in vertebrates include the skin, which eliminates sweat containing some waste products, and the lungs, which expel carbon dioxide, a major metabolic waste.

The efficiency of an excretory system directly impacts an organism's health. Malfunctions can lead to the buildup of toxic substances in the body, causing a range of diseases. Understanding these systems is fundamental to biology and medicine, providing insights into physiological processes and the mechanisms of disease.
