Eristämätön

Eristämätön is a Finnish word that translates to "uninsulated" or "non-insulated" in English. It describes a material or structure that does not provide thermal insulation. This means that heat can readily transfer through it, leading to significant temperature differences between the areas it separates.

In construction, uninsulated walls, roofs, or floors allow heat to escape from a building in winter and enter in summer. This results in higher energy consumption for heating and cooling, as well as decreased comfort for occupants. Materials like plain metal, concrete, or single-pane glass are typically considered uninsulated unless a separate insulating layer is added.

In the context of electrical wiring, "eristämätön" can refer to a conductor that lacks its protective outer covering. Such uninsulated wires pose a serious safety hazard due to the risk of electric shock and short circuits. Therefore, electrical components and wiring are almost always insulated to prevent these dangers. The term can also apply to pipes that are not wrapped with insulating material, leading to heat loss from hot water or, conversely, the freezing of water in cold conditions.
