Erdstruktur

Erdstruktur refers to the internal layered composition of the Earth. Scientists have deduced this structure through seismic wave analysis, observing how vibrations from earthquakes travel through the planet. This analysis reveals distinct layers with varying densities and compositions.

The outermost layer is the crust, a relatively thin, solid shell. Beneath the crust lies the mantle, a much thicker layer composed of silicate rocks that are mostly solid but can flow slowly over geological timescales. The mantle is further divided into the upper and lower mantle.

At the Earth's center is the core, which is divided into two parts. The outer core is a liquid layer primarily made of iron and nickel. This liquid motion is believed to generate the Earth's magnetic field. The innermost part is the solid inner core, also composed mainly of iron and nickel, but under immense pressure, it remains solid despite extremely high temperatures. The boundaries between these layers, such as the Mohorovičić discontinuity between the crust and mantle, and the Gutenberg discontinuity between the mantle and core, are significant geological features. Understanding Erdstruktur is crucial for comprehending plate tectonics, volcanism, and the Earth's thermal evolution.
