The ErP Directive, officially the Directive 2009/125/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, establishes a framework for setting eco-design requirements for energy-related products. Its primary goal is to improve the environmental performance of these products throughout their entire life cycle, from design and manufacturing to use and disposal. The directive aims to reduce the environmental impact of products, thereby contributing to the European Union's energy and climate change objectives.

The ErP Directive does not set specific eco-design requirements itself but rather provides a framework for the European Commission to develop these requirements through implementing measures for specific product groups. These implementing measures are known as "ecodesign regulations." They define specific performance criteria that products must meet to be placed on the EU market. Examples of product categories covered by ecodesign regulations include household appliances like washing machines and refrigerators, lighting, electric motors, and boilers.

Key aspects of the ErP Directive include setting minimum energy efficiency standards, requirements for durability, reparability, and recyclability, and sometimes the reduction of other environmental impacts like water consumption or noise emissions. Manufacturers and importers are responsible for ensuring their products comply with the relevant ecodesign regulations. Non-compliance can result in products being withdrawn from the market. The directive is periodically reviewed and updated to reflect technological advancements and evolving environmental concerns.
