Epäkompostoituvien is a Finnish term that translates to "non-compostable" in English. It refers to materials that cannot be broken down through the process of composting. Composting relies on the action of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, to decompose organic matter into nutrient-rich humus. Materials that are non-compostable typically lack the necessary organic components or possess properties that inhibit microbial activity.

Common examples of non-compostable items include plastics, metals, glass, and certain treated papers. While some plastics are designed to be biodegradable or compostable under specific industrial conditions, most conventional plastics are highly resistant to decomposition and persist in the environment for hundreds or thousands of years. Similarly, inorganic materials like metals and glass do not break down organically and will remain indefinitely. Treated papers, such as those with glossy coatings or certain inks, may also be unsuitable for home composting.
