It describes a material or property that exhibits different values or characteristics when measured in different directions. In materials science, an anisotropic material might have different strengths, thermal conductivity, or electrical resistivity depending on the orientation of the crystalline structure or the manufacturing process. For instance, wood is naturally anisotropic; it is stronger and easier to split along the grain than across it. Similarly, many composite materials are designed to be anisotropic to achieve specific performance characteristics in particular directions.

In physics, anisotropy can be observed in phenomena like the polarization of light, where the electric field oscillates in a specific direction. Certain crystals, such as calcite, are anisotropic and can split a beam of light into two polarized rays traveling in different directions.
