There are several methods employed for epitope identification. One common approach involves using overlapping peptides. This high-throughput method enables the screening of thousands of potential epitopes simultaneously, accelerating the identification process. Furthermore, bioinformatic approaches, utilizing computational algorithms and databases of known epitopes, can predict potential epitope regions, guiding experimental validation.

The knowledge gained from epitope identification is fundamental for vaccine development, as it allows for the design of vaccines that target immunogenic epitopes. It is also essential for the development of diagnostic assays, such as ELISA, and for characterizing the specificity of monoclonal antibodies used in research and therapy. Understanding epitope structure and binding can also shed light on the mechanisms of immune evasion by pathogens and autoimmune diseases.
