Epiteelikohdun

Epiteelikohdun is a Finnish term that translates to "epithelial uterus" or "uterine epithelium." It refers to the innermost lining of the uterus, which is composed of specialized epithelial cells. This lining plays a crucial role in the reproductive process.

The uterine epithelium is a dynamic tissue that undergoes significant changes throughout the menstrual cycle under the influence of hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone. These cyclical changes prepare the uterus for potential pregnancy. During the proliferative phase, the epithelium thickens and becomes more glandular. Following ovulation, during the secretory phase, the glands secrete nutrients and other substances essential for the implantation of a fertilized egg.

If fertilization and implantation occur, the uterine epithelium, along with the underlying endometrium, forms the decidua, which is the maternal part of the placenta. If pregnancy does not occur, the uterine epithelium, along with the rest of the endometrium, is shed during menstruation.
