The term derives from "epimysium," which is the outermost layer of connective tissue enveloping muscle tissue, and "samt," a Scandinavian word meaning "together" or "with." However, in mainstream anatomical terminology, "epimysium" is the standard term.

The epimysium functions to protect muscles from friction against other muscles and bones, provides structural support, and helps transmit the force generated by muscle contractions to tendons and bones. It is composed predominantly of dense irregular connective tissue, containing collagen fibers that confer strength and durability.

Within muscles, the epimysium is continuous with the perimysium, which surrounds individual fascicles (bundles of muscle fibers), and the endomysium, which encases individual muscle fibers. This layered connective tissue system facilitates the coordinated function of muscle fibers and supports vascular and nerve supply.
