Epämetyloitunut refers to a state where a molecule, typically DNA or a protein, has not undergone methylation. Methylation is a common biochemical process where a methyl group (CH3) is added to a molecule. In the context of DNA, methylation primarily occurs at cytosine bases, usually within CpG dinucleotides. This epigenetic modification plays a crucial role in regulating gene expression, influencing processes such as cellular differentiation, development, and the silencing of repetitive elements. When DNA is epämetyloitunut, it means these methyl groups are absent from the cytosine bases in those specific locations.

The absence of methylation can have significant functional consequences.
