Epäjatkuvuuskohta

An epäjatkuvuuskohta, often translated as a point of discontinuity, is a concept in mathematics, particularly in calculus and analysis, referring to a point where a function is not continuous. A function is considered continuous at a point if three conditions are met: the function is defined at that point, the limit of the function exists at that point, and the value of the function at that point is equal to its limit at that point. If any of these conditions fail, the point is an epäjatkuvuuskohta.

There are several types of discontinuities. A removable discontinuity occurs when the limit of the function exists at the point, but either the function is not defined at that point or its value does not match the limit. This type of discontinuity can often be "removed" by redefining the function at that single point. An essential discontinuity, also known as an infinite discontinuity or a jump discontinuity, occurs when the limit of the function does not exist at the point. For a jump discontinuity, the left-hand and right-hand limits exist but are not equal. For an infinite discontinuity, at least one of the one-sided limits is infinite.
