Eosinófilos

Eosinófilos are a type of white blood cell, also known as leukocytes, that play a role in the immune system. They are a granulocyte, meaning they contain granules in their cytoplasm. These granules are filled with various enzymes and proteins, including histaminase and eosinophil peroxidase, which are released when the eosinophil encounters certain stimuli.

Eosinophils are produced in the bone marrow and circulate in the blood before migrating to tissues throughout the body. They are particularly important in defending against parasitic infections, such as helminths (worms). When activated by parasites or allergens, eosinophils release their granular contents, which can damage and kill the invaders.

In addition to their role in parasitic infections, eosinophils are also involved in allergic reactions. They can be recruited to sites of inflammation in allergic conditions like asthma and eczema, where they contribute to tissue damage and inflammation by releasing mediators such as cytokines and chemokines. An elevated number of eosinophils in the blood or tissues, known as eosinophilia, can indicate a parasitic infection, allergic disease, or certain other conditions. Conversely, a low count, called eosinopenia, is less common and can be associated with stress or certain medications. The normal range for eosinophils in the blood is typically between 1% and 4% of the total white blood cell count.
