Enzymvrije is a Dutch term meaning enzyme-free, used to describe materials, products, or processes in which enzymatic activity has been removed or inactivated. In practical use, it refers to conditions or preparations intended to prevent enzymatic reactions that could alter quality, stability, or safety. The term is common in food technology, biotechnology, and analytical chemistry, where controlling enzymatic activity is important for shelf life, flavor, texture, and experimental accuracy.

Achieving enzymvrije conditions typically involves methods that remove or neutralize enzymes. Heat treatments such as pasteurization or sterilization denature many enzymes. pH adjustments can inactivate certain enzymes sensitive to acidity or alkalinity. Filtration techniques (for example, microfiltration or ultrafiltration) can separate enzymes from other components based on size. Adsorption methods use resins, activated carbon, or ion-exchange materials to bind and remove enzymes. In some contexts, chemical inhibitors or combination approaches are employed. In bioprocessing, enzymvrije states may be sought to prevent undesired side reactions or to ensure precise control over manufactured products.
