Entrainment refers to the phenomenon where two or more oscillating systems synchronize their frequencies and phases. This synchronization occurs when the interacting systems are close enough in frequency or when one system exerts a sufficiently strong influence on the other. Entrainment is a common occurrence in both natural and artificial systems.

In physics, entrainment can be observed in coupled pendulums, where their swings gradually become synchronized. Electrical engineers utilize entrainment in the design of oscillators and frequency converters. Biologically, circadian rhythms in living organisms are a form of entrainment, where internal biological clocks synchronize with external cues like light-dark cycles. The heart's pacemaker cells also exhibit entrainment, with individual cells coordinating to produce a regular heartbeat.

The process of entrainment typically involves a weaker oscillator being pulled into the frequency of a stronger oscillator, or mutual synchronization when both oscillators have similar strengths. The degree of coupling between the systems and the initial phase difference are crucial factors determining whether entrainment occurs and how quickly it happens. Mathematical models, such as the Kuramoto model, are often used to describe and predict entrainment phenomena in complex systems.
