Enklávy

Enklávy are distinct territorial or population groups entirely surrounded by another group. This term can refer to geographical areas, like a city or region within a larger country, or to ethnic or religious communities living within a larger society. The concept of an enclave highlights the spatial separation and distinct identity of a group surrounded by another.

Geographical enclaves can arise from historical events, political boundaries, or administrative divisions. For example, certain towns or districts might be geographically isolated from their parent country due to the borders of neighboring states. Similarly, within a country, a municipality might be completely encircled by other municipalities, forming a distinct administrative unit.

Population enclaves, often referred to as ethnic or religious enclaves, are communities of people with shared cultural, linguistic, or religious backgrounds who live together within a larger, more diverse population. These enclaves can form for various reasons, including immigration patterns, social cohesion, or the desire to maintain cultural traditions. While enclaves can foster a sense of community and preserve cultural heritage, they can also sometimes lead to social segregation or unique political dynamics depending on the surrounding environment. The presence of an enclave implies a clear distinction between the surrounded group and the surrounding one, whether in terms of territory or community.
