Engedély

Engedély is a Hungarian term used to describe permission granted by a competent authority to undertake a restricted activity or to use a resource. It can refer to both a license and a permit, depending on the context. An engedély is issued only after the applicant demonstrates compliance with applicable laws, standards, and conditions set by the issuing authority.

Common types of engedély include the építési engedély (building permit), which authorizes construction or demolition work; the működési engedély or üzemi engedély (operating or business permit), which allows a company or facility to operate legally; and specific permits such as a fegyver engedély (firearm permit) or környezetvédelmi engedély (environmental permit). Foreign workers may also require a munkavállalási engedély (work permit) in some jurisdictions. In many cases, engedély requirements are governed by sector-specific laws and are administered by local or national authorities.

The application process typically involves submitting forms and supporting documents to the relevant authority, paying a fee, and sometimes undergoing inspections, background checks, or risk assessments. Decisions are usually issued within a statutory deadline and may be granted with conditions or subject to renewal. If an application is denied, or if conditions are not met, the decision can often be appealed or reviewed by higher administrative bodies or courts.

Engedély serves to protect public interests, such as safety, health, the environment, and orderly market functioning. Possessing or using an activity without the required engedély can lead to penalties, including fines, order to suspend activity, or revocation of the permit. The concept is common across many legal systems in Central and Eastern Europe and often interacts with broader regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements.
