Energimærkning

Energimærkning, or energy labeling, is a system for communicating the energy performance of products and buildings to consumers. It is part of European Union policy to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and is implemented in Denmark through national authorities and standards bodies.

In the product domain, energimærkning covers a wide range of household appliances and lighting. Labels show an energy efficiency class on a scale from A to G (with A the most efficient) and typically provide an estimate of annual energy consumption in kilowatt-hours, along with key product specifications such as capacity or noise. The label enables consumers to compare running costs and environmental impact and has driven improvements in efficiency across many product sectors.

In the building sector, energimærkning refers to energy performance certificates (Energimærkning af bygninger). When a building is constructed, sold, or rented, an energy label is issued that rates the building from A to G based on predicted or measured energy use per square meter per year. The certificate includes information on expected energy costs, primary energy sources, and recommended improvement measures. In Denmark, the certificate is prepared by certified energy assessors and is valid for a defined period (typically 10 years).

Regulation and aim: energy labeling is anchored in EU directives, notably the Energy Labeling Directive and the EPBD, and is transposed into national law. Labels are periodically updated to reflect technological progress, with the overall aim of helping consumers make informed choices, stimulating efficiency gains, and supporting national energy-reduction targets.
