Energiemission

Energiemission is the release of energy by matter or systems in the form of electromagnetic radiation or particles, arising from transitions between energy levels, thermal motion, chemical reactions, or nuclear processes. The emitted energy can propagate as photons, phonons, electrons, or other particles, depending on the mechanism. Emission can be spontaneous or stimulated, and the resulting radiation often has a spectrum characteristic of the source.

The main categories include thermal emission, electronic and vibrational-rotational emission, and chemical and nuclear emission. Thermal emission results from thermal motion of charges and, at equilibrium, follows Planck's law; the spectral distribution is governed by temperature and emissivity. Kirchhoff's law states that, at a given wavelength and in thermal equilibrium, emissivity equals absorptivity. Electronic transitions produce spectral lines or bands as excited atoms or molecules relax; spontaneous emission occurs without external prompting, while stimulated emission requires an incident photon and is the principle behind lasers.

Measurements rely on spectroscopy and radiative-transfer analysis. The spectral power distribution, line intensities, and angular distribution reveal temperature, composition, density, and motion through features such as Doppler broadening. The total emitted power connects to macroscopic relations like the Stefan-Boltzmann law for blackbodies and to material-specific emissivities.

Energiemission plays a central role in fields from astronomy and atmospheric science to lighting, photovoltaics, and nuclear physics. Understanding emission processes supports energy-budget assessments, diagnostic methods, and the design of light sources, detectors, and energy-harvesting devices.
