Energibegrænsede describes systems or processes whose rate or extent is constrained by the supply or use of energy. In practice, energy constraints can be the primary bottleneck even when other resources are available. The concept contrasts with bottlenecks caused by nutrients, information, or material goods.

The term is used across disciplines such as ecology, physiology, engineering, and information technology to describe scenarios where energy availability sets limits on growth, activity, or output. In ecology, for instance, the energy budget of an organism or ecosystem determines feeding relationships and growth. In engineering, devices designed for limited power sources must operate within energy budgets, leading to design choices that prioritize efficiency and longevity.

In remote sensing or space missions, energy-constrained operations require duty cycling and low-power modes. In data centers or mobile devices, energy efficiency is a central concern, making energy constraints a design driver.

Analysts quantify energy constraints using energy flow or budget concepts, such as power input, metabolic or computational energy cost, and energy return on investment. Models may couple energy budgets with performance outcomes to predict system behavior under different energy availabilities.
