Energiatartalékot, often translated as energy reserve or energy storage, refers to the capacity of a biological organism to store energy for future use. This stored energy can be in various forms, primarily as chemical compounds. The most common forms of energy reserves in animals are fats (triglycerides) and glycogen. In plants, starch and oils serve as primary energy reserves.

Fats are a highly efficient form of energy storage due to their high energy density, meaning they provide more energy per unit of mass compared to carbohydrates. Fats are typically stored in adipose tissue. Glycogen, a polysaccharide, is stored primarily in the liver and muscles of animals. It is a readily available source of glucose for immediate energy needs, particularly important for short bursts of activity or during periods of fasting.

Plants store energy in seeds, roots, and tubers, often as starch and oils, to support germination and growth. These reserves are crucial for the survival of perennial plants through unfavorable seasons and for the establishment of new seedlings.
