Endoplasmaatilise

Endoplasmaatilise is a term used to describe the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and related processes in eukaryotic cells. The ER is an extensive membranous network in the cytoplasm that is continuous with the outer nuclear membrane and plays a central role in the synthesis of secretory and membrane proteins, lipid metabolism, and calcium storage.

The ER consists of interconnected tubules and flattened sacs called cisternae. It exists in two main forms: rough ER, which has ribosomes on its cytosolic surface and is the site of protein synthesis and quality control; and smooth ER, which lacks ribosomes and participates in lipid synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, and detoxification in some cell types. The ER forms a continuous network that extends throughout the cytoplasm and connects to the perinuclear space.

Functions of the ER include proper protein folding and processing, glycosylation, and insertion of proteins into membranes. It also synthesizes lipids and phospholipids, contributes to calcium storage and homeostasis, and participates in detoxification reactions in certain tissues. In secretory cells, such as plasma cells and pancreatic cells, the ER supports high rates of protein production and trafficking.

ER stress can occur when misfolded or unfolded proteins accumulate, triggering the unfolded protein response (UPR). The UPR aims to restore homeostasis by increasing chaperone levels, reducing overall protein synthesis, and enhancing degradation of aberrant proteins; if stress remains unresolved, it can initiate apoptosis.
