Endaþarmsveggnum is an Icelandic term that translates to "endometrium" in English. The endometrium is the inner lining of the uterus, a specialized mucous membrane. It plays a crucial role in the female reproductive system, particularly in menstruation and pregnancy.

Each month, under the influence of hormones like estrogen and progesterone, the endometrium thickens and becomes rich in blood vessels. This prepared lining is essential for the implantation of a fertilized egg. If fertilization occurs, the embryo implants into the endometrium, and the lining continues to support the developing pregnancy.

If fertilization does not occur, hormonal levels drop, leading to the shedding of the endometrium. This shedding process is known as menstruation, commonly referred to as a period. The blood and tissue from the uterine lining are expelled from the body. The endometrium then begins to rebuild itself in preparation for the next cycle.

Variations in the endometrium can be indicative of various conditions.
