Enantiomeeriä

Enantiomeeriä is the Finnish term for enantiomers. Enantiomers are a type of stereoisomer where two molecules are non-superimposable mirror images of each other, much like a left hand and a right hand. This specific type of isomerism arises when a molecule contains a chiral center, which is typically a carbon atom bonded to four different groups.

In chemistry, enantiomers possess identical physical properties such as melting point, boiling point, and density. However, their behavior can differ significantly in chiral environments. One of the most notable differences is their interaction with polarized light. One enantiomer will rotate the plane of polarized light clockwise (dextrorotatory, denoted as + or d), while the other will rotate it counterclockwise (levorotatory, denoted as - or l) by the same magnitude.

Another crucial distinction lies in their biological activity. Many biological molecules, such as amino acids and sugars, are chiral. Receptors and enzymes in living organisms are also chiral and often interact specifically with only one enantiomer of a molecule. This enantioselectivity can lead to drastically different pharmacological effects. For example, one enantiomer of a drug might be therapeutic, while the other could be inactive or even toxic. Thalidomide is a tragic historical example where one enantiomer was a sedative, and the other caused severe birth defects. The study and separation of enantiomers are therefore vital in fields like pharmaceuticals, organic chemistry, and biochemistry.
