Emissiviteeteistä, often translated as emissivity, is a fundamental property of a material that describes its ability to radiate thermal energy. It is a dimensionless quantity ranging from 0 to 1, where 1 represents a perfect blackbody radiator that absorbs and emits all incident electromagnetic radiation. Conversely, a value of 0 indicates a perfect reflector that neither absorbs nor emits radiation.

The emissivity of a surface is influenced by several factors, including its material composition, surface texture, and temperature. For instance, dull and dark surfaces generally have higher emissivities than shiny and light-colored surfaces. This is why a black t-shirt gets hotter in the sun than a white one. Different materials emit radiation at different rates even when at the same temperature.

Understanding emissivity is crucial in various scientific and engineering applications. In thermal imaging, it allows for the accurate measurement of surface temperatures. In heat transfer calculations, it helps determine the amount of radiant energy exchanged between surfaces.
