Embecovirus

Embecovirus is a genus of viruses within the order Nidovirales, family Coronaviridae, and subfamily Orthocoronavirinae. This genus was formerly part of the genus Coronavirus, but was reclassified in 2020. Embecoviruses are known to infect a variety of mammalian hosts, including humans, bats, and rodents.

These viruses are characterized by their single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genome, which is enclosed within an envelope. The name "embecovirus" is derived from the abbreviation for "enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus" and "coronavirus." Like other coronaviruses, embecoviruses possess distinctive club-shaped spikes on their surface, which are responsible for their characteristic corona-like appearance under an electron microscope.

Embecoviruses are a significant cause of respiratory and enteric diseases in their respective hosts. While some embecoviruses cause mild, self-limiting infections, others can lead to more severe illness. Research into embecoviruses is ongoing, focusing on understanding their transmission, pathogenesis, and potential for zoonotic spillover. Their genetic diversity and ability to evolve present ongoing challenges for public health surveillance and the development of effective interventions.
