Emancipació

Emancipació is the Catalan term for emancipation, the act or process of gaining freedom or legal independence from authority, control, or oppression. The word is used across contexts to describe both legal freedom for individuals and broader social or political liberation. In legal language, l'emancipació refers to the status whereby a minor obtains the capacity to act as an adult in certain matters, usually through a formal process that may require court authorization or parental consent. Once emancipated, the individual often gains rights to enter into contracts, manage property, or make decisions without parental approval, subject to local law.

In historical and political contexts, emancipació describes movements or actions that release people from bondage, subjugation, or colonial rule. Notable examples include the abolition of slavery in the 19th century and various decolonization or nationality movements in the 20th century. The term is also applied to social movements seeking to extend political, civil, or economic rights to groups that have been restricted, such as women’s emancipation and minority rights campaigns.
