Elmaradnaks

Elmaradnaks are a fictional semi-aquatic herbivorous species created for worldbuilding and speculative fiction. In most depictions, they inhabit the tidal lagoons and kelp forests of the imaginary Archipelago of Lirene and nearby coastal regions.

Description: Adults range up to two meters in length. They have a broad back carapace, a long flexible neck, and four paddle-like flippers. Their skin displays iridescent patches that change color for camouflage, and they emit low-frequency vocalizations.

Ecology and behavior: Elmaradnaks graze on kelp, sea grasses, and algae, forming small pods of five to thirty individuals. They rely on coordinated grazing and shallow coastal migrations. Predators in stories include large sea eels and coastal raptors. They communicate with underwater clicks and surface displays.

Reproduction and life cycle: Breeding occurs in spring. Litters typically include one to three young. Juveniles remain with the herd for several years, reaching maturity around age three to five and living about 15 to 20 years in most narratives.
