Elléptetések, a Hungarian term, refers to a variety of techniques used to remove or reduce the prominence of certain sounds within a spoken word or phrase. This phenomenon is common in casual speech and can manifest in several ways. One form is elision, where a sound is completely omitted, such as dropping the final vowel in "köszönöm" to "köszönm". Another is assimilation, where a sound changes to become more like a neighboring sound, for example, the 't' in "hattyú" (swan) often becomes a 'ty' sound due to the following 'ty' sound. Apocope is a specific type of elision where the final sound of a word is dropped, often seen in informal speech. Synecdoche, though not strictly an elléptetés, can involve a similar shortening or alteration of a word for brevity. These sound changes are natural linguistic processes that contribute to fluency and ease of articulation. They are typically learned implicitly through exposure to the language and are not usually taught explicitly in formal language instruction. The extent to which elléptetések occur can vary depending on the speaker, the region, and the formality of the situation.
