For example, rubbing a balloon on hair can transfer electrons, causing the balloon to become negatively charged and the hair to lose electrons and become positively charged. They play a crucial role in the formation of atoms and molecules, holding electrons in orbit around the nucleus and binding atoms together. On a larger scale, these forces are involved in lightning, the operation of photocopiers, and electrostatic precipitators used to remove pollutants from industrial emissions.
