Elektroodides

Elektroodides is a term occasionally seen in non-English sources to describe iodide-containing species studied or produced in electrochemical contexts. The spelling suggests a connection to electrochemical processes and iodide chemistry, but in standard English the more common terms are electroiodides or polyiodides. The lack of a single, universally accepted definition means the word can refer to different but related concepts.

In practice, elektroodides may refer to two related classes. First, polyiodides, such as I3−, I5− and higher polyiodide ions, formed when iodide (I−) reacts with iodine (I2) or undergoes oxidation in solution. These species are important in redox chemistry and in electrolyte systems for energy storage applications. Second, metal iodides (M I, such as transition-metal or alkali-metal iodides) that can be generated or studied via electrochemical methods, for example by electrodeposition from iodide-containing electrolytes.

Preparation typically involves electrochemical steps: oxidizing iodide at an electrode to generate iodine and polyiodides in solution, or precipitating metal iodides through electrochemical deposition from molten salts or ionic liquids. Polyiodides are often intensely colored and display distinctive absorption features in the visible spectrum, while metal iodides vary widely in stability and structure.

Applications span energy storage, such as iodide/iodine redox systems used in batteries and dye-sensitized solar cells, as well as catalytic and synthetic roles where iodide transfer or iodination is desired. Safety concerns include chemical reactivity and potential toxicity of iodine species, requiring proper handling and ventilation.
