Elektronövergångarna, often translated as electron transitions, refers to the process where an electron in an atom or molecule changes its energy level. Electrons typically occupy specific, quantized energy states. When an electron absorbs energy, such as from a photon of light, it can jump to a higher, unoccupied energy level. This is known as an excitation. Conversely, when an electron in a higher energy state loses energy, it can fall to a lower energy level. This energy loss is often emitted as a photon of light.

The energy difference between the initial and final states of the electron determines the energy of the absorbed or emitted photon. This relationship is described by Planck's equation, E = hf, where E is the energy, h is Planck's constant, and f is the frequency of the photon. Different elements and molecules have unique sets of allowed energy levels, leading to characteristic spectra when they undergo electron transitions.

These transitions are fundamental to understanding phenomena like atomic emission and absorption spectra, fluorescence, phosphorescence, and the behavior of light in various materials. For instance, the colors of fireworks are a result of electron transitions in different metal atoms excited by heat. Spectroscopy, a technique that analyzes the light emitted or absorbed by a substance, relies heavily on the study of electron transitions to identify and characterize materials. The precise wavelengths of light involved in these transitions act as fingerprints for specific atoms and molecules.
