Elektronisiirtäjä, often translated as electron transporter or electron shuttle, refers to a molecule or molecular complex that facilitates the transfer of electrons from one molecule to another. This process is fundamental to a vast array of biological and chemical reactions. In biological systems, electron transport chains are crucial for energy production, most notably in cellular respiration and photosynthesis. These chains involve a series of protein complexes embedded within membranes that sequentially accept and donate electrons, releasing energy at each step.

Key examples of electron transporters include cytochromes, quinones, and iron-sulfur proteins. Cytochromes, for instance, contain a heme group with an iron atom that can readily change oxidation state, enabling electron transfer. Quinones are mobile electron carriers that can move within membranes, linking different protein complexes. Iron-sulfur clusters are also common prosthetic groups in enzymes involved in electron transfer.

Beyond biology, electron transporters play roles in electrochemistry and materials science. They are utilized in batteries, fuel cells, and various catalytic processes.
