Elektromiográfiát

Elektromiográfiát, often abbreviated as EMG, is a diagnostic technique used to evaluate the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles. It is also used to assess the function of nerves that control muscles. The procedure involves the insertion of a fine needle electrode into the muscle to be tested. This electrode detects the electrical signals generated by muscle fibers when they contract and relax. These signals are then amplified and displayed on a monitor as waveforms.

Another method of EMG involves placing surface electrodes on the skin over the muscle. This technique is less invasive and is often used to assess gross muscle activity or to guide more precise needle EMG examinations. The recorded electrical activity provides information about the health of the muscles and the nerves that innervate them. Abnormal patterns in the EMG signals can indicate various neuromuscular disorders.

EMG is frequently performed in conjunction with nerve conduction studies (NCS). NCS measures the speed and strength of electrical signals as they travel along nerves. By combining EMG and NCS, clinicians can pinpoint the location and nature of nerve or muscle damage. This diagnostic approach is crucial for identifying conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy, and radiculopathy. The results of an EMG examination help physicians diagnose, monitor, and manage a wide range of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.
