Elektrolüütideks is a term used in chemistry to refer to substances that, when dissolved in a solvent such as water, produce an electrically conductive solution. This conductivity arises from the dissociation of the substance into charged particles called ions. These ions are then free to move within the solution and carry an electrical current. Electrolytes can be either ionic compounds that readily dissociate in solution or molecular compounds that undergo ionization in specific solvents.

The nature of an electrolyte is determined by its ability to dissociate into ions. Strong electrolytes dissociate almost completely, meaning a large proportion of the dissolved substance exists as ions. Examples include strong acids like hydrochloric acid (HCl) and strong bases like sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Weak electrolytes, on the other hand, only partially dissociate, with a significant portion of the substance remaining in its molecular form. Examples include weak acids like acetic acid (CH3COOH) and weak bases like ammonia (NH3).

In biology, electrolytes play crucial roles in physiological processes such as nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and maintaining fluid balance. In industrial chemistry, electrolytes are essential components in batteries, electroplating, and various electrochemical reactions.
