Elektrolüüsija

Elektrolüüsija is a term used in Estonian to refer to an electrolytic cell or an electrolysis apparatus. This device is fundamental to the process of electrolysis, which is a method of using electrical energy to drive a non-spontaneous chemical reaction. Essentially, an elektrolüüsija consists of a container holding an electrolyte, which is a solution or molten substance containing ions that can conduct electricity. Two electrodes, an anode (positive electrode) and a cathode (negative electrode), are immersed in the electrolyte. When an electric current is applied, it causes chemical changes at the electrodes. At the cathode, reduction occurs, where a substance gains electrons. At the anode, oxidation takes place, where a substance loses electrons. This process is widely used in various industrial applications, including the production of metals like aluminum and copper, the purification of metals, the production of chlorine and sodium hydroxide, and in electroplating. The design and specific components of an elektrolüüsija can vary significantly depending on the particular electrolysis process being carried out.
